Neko Case Biography Facts

Neko Richelle Case was born in the United States of parents of Ukrainian origin, she spent her early years from one city to another, her father was a member of the US Air Force. The family finally settled in the west of the country, in Tacoma, a city in the state of Washington.

The first Neko’s passion for music was manifested at a very young age, she left the house and became a drummer for the Del Logs and the Propanes band when she was only 15. However, her serious music career began only in Vancouver, Canada, where she studied graphic design at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Outside of class, she soon got free to her immense taste for music by accompanying various local groups such as Del Logs, the Propanes, the Weasels, Maow and Cub. All of these groups played punk music, with the exception of Cub and the Weasels, which Case later describes as "Country Supergroups". Since then, her taste for this musical genre was growing and it took hardly three years to release her first album with her group "Neko Case & Her Boyfriends", The Virginian. This first opus is marked by the presence of original works but also covers of songs by Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn but also the title "Misfire" Queen. Critics welcomed this first album and compare Neko Case to the pioneers of Honky Tonk and Rockabilly.

After that, a new page opens in the Neko Case biography. Moving to Chicago at the end of 1999, the singer recorded her second studio album called 'Furnace Room Lullaby'. The publication of this album became a starting point in the career of a musician, it received positive reviews from critics, and Neko's music was for the first time fully recognized. Two years later, the next album 'Blacklisted' was dropped out, which became the first musical work to get into the national charts (Billboard's US Indie - 31-chart position). Blacklisted musically meant a big step for Case, having previously played with her own band (Neko Case & Her Boyfriends) country with many rock elements, Blacklisted's tone is much grimmer.

Thereafter, The New Pornographers was formed in Vancouver In 2000. It consisted of local musicians like Carl Newman and John Collins. Case, who had to leave the city after her studies for immigration reasons and moved to Chicago, sang and played tambourine for them on three albums. Kathryn Calder has replaced her at live concerts since 2005.

Case’s first live album ‘The Tigers Have Spoken’ came out on the market in 2004. In this 30-minute work, Neko Case brought together her live-compositions, new titles, and cover versions. In early March 2006, her fourth official solo studio album 'Fox Confessor Bring's The Flood' appeared. The main topics are a political loss of trust as well as references to Russian and Ukrainian folk tales. This album was the definitive breakthrough in the US as it not only entered the Billboard charts but also came into view on major US talk shows with David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and Jay Leno, making it widely known. Among other things, therefore, she succeeded in March 2009, with her next studio record 'Middle Cyclone' on the sensational for her third place on the Billboard charts.

Of the most recent works of the singer, it is worth noting such studio work, as ‘The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You’ in 2013, ‘Case/lang/veirs’ featuring Kathryn Dawn Lang and Laura Veirs in 2016. The next Neko Case’s musical opus is Hell-On due out on June 1, 2019, with which the singer goes on a big tour across North America.
